Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level names remained functional.
